There’s a wonderful sense of irony with Waimate’s famous yellow barn. That being the fact that they’re using an introduced, invasive pest that happily nibbles its way across the country to advertise the town. It’s a man named Michael Studholme who can take a bow for introducing this unwanted species into New Zealand. During the 1870s, he decided it would be a good idea to release wallabies on his property as a novelty, a decision everyone has regretted ever since.
