Hail Storm Over Green Island

Daily Photo: Hail storm over Green Island

I took this photo the other day, a few minutes before an intense hailstorm hit!

Only a few days earlier, it had been a glorious 26 degrees, without a cloud in the sky or a breath of wind across the city. The next day was much the same, with the temperature peaking at a lovely 24 degrees. What followed was a run of almost unprecedented weather for Dunedin in October, with four or five days of dreamy, island-like weather that hinted that a long, hot summer might be just over the horizon.

Unfortunately, we were snapped back to reality and reminded that it is, in fact, spring. Right on cue, the temperature plummeted to single digits, the high winds picked up, and wintry storms of rain, hail and thunder rolled in from the south.

I can only hope that those wonderfully blissful five days of weather weren’t actually summer!
