The Road to Dunedin, With a Side Order of Timber

Daily Photo: Lookout Point, Dunedin

There are plenty of places around Dunedin where you can stop and admire the view. Lookout Point is one of them, although the overbridge offers a slightly different experience. Rather than a peaceful panorama with birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves, you get a steady stream of traffic and the occasional reminder that New Zealand’s economy still relies heavily on things being transported from one place to another.

Looking back towards the city, the road winds downhill through a patchwork of green hills, houses and bush, eventually delivering motorists towards the distant rooftops of Dunedin. Above it all, the clouds were gathering with the sort of enthusiasm that suggests the weather had plans of its own. The traffic provided a little movement for the photograph, particularly the logging truck heading towards town. There’s something wonderfully appropriate about a truckload of timber thundering into Dunedin beneath a sky that looks as though it might be considering supplying a few more trees.

Meanwhile, the rest of the traffic carried on regardless. People heading to or from work, going shopping, visiting family or perhaps simply wondering why they hadn’t left five minutes earlier. I stood above it all, camera in hand, enjoying the view without having to join the queue. Sometimes, being a pedestrian has its advantages.
